Lying is dysregulating. That would be the summary of my most recent experiences of making a conscious effort to tell the truth. Any time I find myself holding something in that I really want to say, agreeing with something I don’t actually agree with (or even just letting something float by me that I adamantly disagree with without saying something), my heart rate spikes, my body starts to shake, and I feel a little bit nauseous.

These are my tells that I am telling (or living in) a lie. When I tell the truth—even if I do it imperfectly, but simply honour the effort to tell the truth—I find it to be a radically liberating experience. It’s like this fiery ball of energy that is building up inside of me, begging to be released, finally gets to be free.

Like a dragon recoiling softly into itself after releasing a bellowing stream of flames, releasing the truth I’m holding onto seems to instantly ignite a wave of calm that rushes over me. After expressing myself, I feel light again. Clear. Calm. Regulated. Ready to observe what emerges without the impulse to extinguish it.

And when I don’t tell the truth, it’s like this uncomfortable suffocation of flames occurs internally that dissolves into soot and smoke and hot coals, eroding me from within. All of this discomfort and dysregulation can be avoided, I’ve learned, by simply letting the flame of truth come through me without suppressing it. Using it as fuel. Speaking without censoring myself to optimize for what others want to hear vs. what I want to say.

move slower, tell the truth

I used to wonder how some of the most disagreeable, truth-telling people I know also seemed the most calm and regulated. How do they stay so grounded when they are causing energetic rifts to those around them?
